One album happens to be the X-Static release of 1979. I've uncovered quite a few promo and marketing materials.

The band was out on the west coast and seemed to have taken part in some rather quirky marketing schemes. And it's super clear that Daryl Hall & John Oates have a strange penchant for being placed inside large musical instruments, recording devices, etc. (okay, okay, we all know that's not true!).

Press Kit - Press Release

So check this out. Someone had the idea of creating a large transistor radio where fans could enter and listen to the new X-Static album. Personally, I think this is brilliant!

Press photo.

When you put the album and it's promotion together there really was a concise plan linking it all together. Especially when you add the videos shot for 3 tracks which include, Wait For Me, Portable Radio, and Intravino.

The props in the videos all link back to the transistor radio theme, hence X-Static...or, no static. Afterall, static interrupts the flow of the music, it ruins the song you might be listening to.

And if you were lucky enough, you may have received an invitation to attend a show at the Roxy featuring the new album. The audio for the November 4th show is available out there in the bootleg trader's world. This show was broadcast live on KLOS-FM in Los Angeles. Here's the setlist for that show:

Fabulous, right?!?! Now here are the 3 videos recorded for X-Static. I had the chance to speak with Adam Friedman, the director, a while back. He was 22 at the time. The Portable Radio vid was actually an afterthought from John who asked him to record this one quickly. There is also a video recording out there of The Woman Comes and Goes. I have yet to locate it, but trust me I'm working on it! Hope you enjoy the videos!

UPDATE: Thanks to VEVO and poster Jay I've added the video for The Woman Comes and Goes!

This was the final show for Jim and I on this tour. Bittersweet for sure. We drove down to Atlantic City the day before. No incidents as far as traffic was concerned which is always a plus. Upon arrival, first thing's first...check in. It seems that everyone else in Atlantic City had the same idea! Jim hopped in the huge line...luckily is moved quickly and we were off to our room. We had a relaxing afternoon, a nice dinner, and a lovely stroll on the boardwalk.

The band hadn't made it to the hotel yet for good reason. They were thrilling the fans in Virginia at the Wolf Trap. I knew they'd be driving up to A.C. after the show that night so we'd get to see the guys in the AM hopefully. Sure enough we did see them throughout the day on Friday before the show. I finally got the chance to meet Shane. Super nice guy! Shared a few H&O anecdotes with him that he found quite funny. Great conversation with the guys throughout the next couple days. I love those moments.

OK, time for the show! Ascending the escalator to the Event Center we spotted some friends! We chatted for a bit outside the concert space and took a few glances at merchandise...nothing new. Rats! We then headed in to find our seats. Easy enough. Jimmy then went to ask security about cameras, etc. He's found through the years that this is the best way to handle things. Talk to them, build a rapport...really, it works. He has Borgata security friends! Hilarious! So, the word was cameras were OK as long as flash and video settings were not used. And of course no pro-cameras allowed. Easy peasy. I noticed throughout the show that there was one guard that actually patrolled the aisles looking for video takers. It seemed to be his only task. Actually made sense to me as the guards in the front didn't have to leave their posts. From a fan's viewpoint it was lousy....from a security standpoint it was smart.

As usual the show started with Maneater and Out of Touch. Then all of a sudden I felt like I was in a dream! Well, maybe it wasn't that dramatic. I heard "Do It For Love" come out of Daryl's mouth and I was flabbergasted! I looked at Jimmy and we both stood and cheered! They played it perfectly...didn't miss a beat. It was awesome! To my surprise the next song was another semi-deep cut, "Did It In A Minute" followed by "Back Together Again". I was a happy girl. Whatever came next was icing on the cake!

The remainder of the set and the encores were standard...the hits. The encores came and a number of folks rushed the stage. Jim and I were stuck in the middle of a row. Jim being Jim, he decided to move chairs out of the way and stack them on top on one another. It worked. Up we went! They finished off the show with "Private Eyes" and the crowd was more than satisfied! After the cheering and clapping ended Jim snagged a setlist and off we went to the merch table to meet up with Eliot. The lousy thing about the Borgata is that they try to move the crowd out right after the show ends. So there isn't much time for chat, or pictures, buying tees or CDs, etc. Eliot did have time to take some pics and sign CDs for some fans which I was happy about. It had actually been 6 years since Eliot and I had taken a picture together...we had to have a new one for sure!

As the crowd was now descending into the casino via the escalator Jimmy spotted a celebrity! It was none other than Philly native ?uestlove (Questlove). Of course Jim had to get a pic so he ran over to him. You could tell that he was trying to keep a love profile but was quite obliging and honored our request. Very nice guy! Glad we were able to meet him. It was a great ending to a great show!

Kerrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15407654392102840692noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-481144268064653812.post-46587993815461365592014-07-08T17:13:00.001-04:002014-07-08T17:13:54.927-04:00And we're off....to Wallingford!!!This was a bit of a steamy day with downpours to boot. I was praying that there would be air conditioning in the theater...you never know. We waited a few minutes for the doors to be opened to the public. The line wasn't overly long. We easily had our tickets scanned and proceeded into the "dome" which apparently used to be the old performance center. There was little to no A/C in there. Very warm.

There was quite a lot to choose from as far as concessions are concerned. Pretzels, hot dogs, all sorts of beverages, etc. We skipped the concessions. They get in the way of dancing. Priorities. We headed into the theater and gradually began to see many familiar faces. It was good to chat and catch up. We then learned that concert footage was being filmed that night for Daryl's new DIY channel show (Daryl's Restoration Over-Hall) which premiers on July 19th. We also found out photos were being shot throughout the performance for a special tour book meant for the upcoming European tour. Exciting stuff!! Needless to say there were TV cameras everywhere. They didn't obstruct the view of the stage at all. Cameras were allowed...no flash and no video, however. Score! Maybe these pics would come out a bit better than Boston!

We were quite lucky in Wallingford as we were treated to the Philly-Soul stylings of Mutlu Onaral! He is a born and bred Philadelphian who has been featured on Live From Daryl's House twice in it's 7 year run. Mutlu's songs are full of sweet rhythms and the occasional amusing lyric. He was enjoyed by all. Mutlu was kind enough to meet fans after his set at the merch table to sign autographs and take pictures.

The Hall & Oates show was amazing (as always). It was a bit of a bummer that there really weren't any people dancing until the encores for the most part. It seemed to be an older crowd (which I have no problem with)...maybe that was the reason. I was completely blown away by Shane Theriot's solo during Sara Smile. Man, he can play! Such a great bluesy sound coming from that instrument. I'm not kidding when I say that it really moved me. He is the perfect addition to the band. Shaking it up just enough. Speaking of shaking...check out Daryl moving & grooving!

The setlist was more or less the same as Boston the night before. I thought I had been able to

secure a setlist from this show...but apparently not as I can't locate it anywhere! Oh, well! Does anyone remember what they played? Anyhow, at the final encore we were lucky enough to snap my most favorite Hall & Oates picture ever. What a great feeling to witness this. I seriously has goosebumps!
After the show we met with some fans near the merch table. Eliot Lewis came out to sign a few CDs and take pictures with fans. He was met with a great response! It was cool to see that people were so excited to meet him.

Overall, a great experience was had for our first visit to the Oakdale Theater. We began our 2 1/2 hour journey home and began to get even more excited for our next road trip which was a week away. Atlantic City here we come!!
It's been forever since I've touched this blog with actual commentary. Someone suggested that I get on here and write something up. "Push publish", they said. So here I am and I've done just that. A few weeks ago Jim and I were able to attend 3 Hall & Oates shows. We enjoyed ourselves so much! The shows we were able to get to were Boston's BlueHills Bank Pavillion on June 12th, Wallingford, CT's Oakdale Theater on June 13th, and Atlantic City's Borgata Hotel & Casino on June 20th. We enjoyed each show very much and got to spend time with some fellow fans! Always a good time!

Boston was first up. We arrived in town at about 6PM and secured a parking spot directly across from the venue. So close we could hear soundcheck. We heard the fellas playing "Crazy Eyes" and "Every Time You Go Away". Kind of a neat little perk. A quick dinner was had at Jerry Remy's bar about a block from the Pavillion. Nothing too outstanding or memorable. After that it was off to wait in line to enter the huge white tent.

First stop, as always, MERCH! And surprise there were 2 new items! So exciting. The first

item was an 11x18 poster featuring the "Live at The Apollo" show from 1985. An unsigned version was offered for $10 and the signed (by both Daryl & John) version was available for

$20. A great price in my opinion. This poster would look great matted and framed! Definitely running out of room on the walls here! There was also a poster advertising John Oates new EP
"Good Road to Follow" (which is quite enjoyable I might add!). This poster was of the same size as the Apollo poster and was also signed by John. From what I understand John's posters have been available at his solo shows but they were new for the Hall & Oates shows.

The show itself was great. The Boston crowd ate it all up...singing along and dancing. I also saw at least 2 undergarments throw on stage in Daryl's direction. Hadn't seen that in a while! I enjoyed the setlist. Although one I've heard many times I was glad to hear the relatively new addition of Alone Too Long. What a great song! It's a perfect change up. This was also my first time seeing (and hearing) the band's brand spankin' new Lead Guitarist and Music Director, Shane Theriot. Well, call me very impressed! A well done and solid outing in my estimation. Check out Shane's music here...I think you'll like it!!!

After our 105 minutes of bliss the show ended and we were off. As we walked to the car we noticed the tour bus coming from the rear of the Pavillion. I had heard from a little birdie that the "bosses" were on the bus tonight! Sure enough I could see Daryl through the windsheild. John was in the middle

of the bus and could barely be seen through the tinted glass. Oh, and did I mention the guys had a police escort for the bus?! Too funny! It was nice to see so many fans along the sidewalk cheering for the fellas as they drove off. The night ended but, fear not!! We need some sleep because we've got a show in less than 24 hours!

Oh wait....what's that you say? You want to see pictures of the show?! Please forgive me, it just completely slipped my mind. Just kidding! I know you want them! Here you go!
Most of what I purchase is from Ebay. But, I also frequent record resale shops, etc. These acquisitions of both from Ebay. The first item is a Bigger Than Both of Us Press Kit which I was stoked to find! The second is a set of pictures with the negatives from the early 80's. Love that yellow leather!!
Probably!! This post stems from a conversation happening on Facebook regarding the 2003 Hall & Oates spread and article in Dirt Magazine. The spread featured Daryl Hall, John Oates, Tanner Oates, and Hall's longtime friend, Marcia Strassman (although named as Marcia Strassburg in the article).

Marcia (of Welcome Back Kotter fame) and Daryl have been friends since the mid-seventies. So friendly, in fact, that Daryl gave Marcia a "wings necklace" in which she wore on a regular basis. She can be seen wearing it in episodes of Welcome Back Kotter as well as in press photos. Hope you enjoy!
What an incredible show! I am still reveling in the happiness three days later! My friend and I arrived at the Historic Prowse Farm in Canton, MA for the Life is Good Festival at about 4PM. Our goal was to pick up our passes, tour the festival grounds, grab something to eat, and settle into our spots for the show.

Our passes needed to be picked up at Will Call upon arrival. After traveling from the parking lot to the festival grounds via the super efficient shuttle, we proceeded to the Will Call tent. My tickets for entry were waiting...however, my passes for side stage viewing were missing. Of course anxiety set in...but the Life is Good staff is wonderful and they assured me my passes would be found and delivered within an hour. They allowed us to go into the festival and told us to return in 45 minutes or so.

Let me just say, what a beautiful setting for a festival. Prowse Farm is an amazing piece of land with a lovely meadow and a pond in the center. This historic property boasts the Great Blue Hill as it's backdrop. The festival grounds are clean with trash/recycle/compost repositories within every few yards. Staffers are stationed at these repositories to help you make decisions as to where your trash needs to go. It's quite incredible! Children pranced, danced, and frolicked in the meadow as their parents looked on from their blankets. It was such a wonderful, family friendly atmosphere. Music played from one of the three stages at all times. An overwhelming positive feeling and good vibes were present for the entire evening.

Delicious smells wafted through the air from the line of food stalls that met us upon entering. After walking the grounds and checking out the different areas we decided to have a bite to eat. We split the ribs and an order of kettle chips from the Summer Shack booth. Needing a beverage to wash that down we each selected a Magic Hat #9....it's got a great apricot finish...must find this at my local package store!! Both the ribs and kettle chips were great and hit the spot quite nicely!

We finished our food and beer and then it was time to check for the passes. Upon arrival at the Will Call tent we were greeted by the wonderfully friendly and helpful Chelsea who had our passes ready to go! YAY! We were golden! I was so excited to learn that our passes were actually listed as artist's guest passes and would give us full backstage access. Omigosh! Hyperventilation!

We needed another one of those Magic Hat #9's! As we were in line, who popped up?? Brian Dunne, drummer extraordinaire! The butterflies hit! Out of nowhere! It's that pre-show excitement/nervousness/elation. It happens every time! Then we see the guys coming up on stage, waiting off to the side. Wooo! We are about to get started. Daryl donned his guitar. Porter and John waved to us! All of the guys were casually chatting. Each one with a smile on his face. Here we go!! The band ripped into Out Of Touch!

I will say that they played one of THE best versions of Uncanny that I have ever heard. It was the perfect combination of funky and soulful! The crowd simply ate it up! Daryl and John were both loving the crowd right back. Daryl had very few issues with his monitors and even the sound tech was rocking out! At one point John did have trouble hearing drums but that was quickly remedied. Looking out on the sea of people, I was so proud of my favorite band.

I'm currently debating what camera to bring. Do I go with my old standby...the Canon PowerShot S5IS or do I step out of the box and try the Olympus SP-600UZ that I have been procrastinating on picking up and using? The Canon takes excellent shots in dark theaters where there are frenetic stage lights...that's usually why I go for it. But given that this is an outdoor show where presumably there will be lots of natural lighting...I may be tempted by the Olympus! I really won't have room for two cameras in my bag so I need to make a choice...and fast!

Another reason I am excited for this particular show is that The Roots will be on just before H&O take the stage!! Oh yes...THE ROOTS! This wouldn't be the first time these fellas would share a stage. It should be noted that Daryl Hall sat in with The Roots on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon back in October of 2011 upon the release of his album Laughing Down Crying. Also, Daryl performed at Philadelphia's 4th of July celebration along side The Roots and Queen Latifah back in 2012.

As a fan, I am secretly hoping for a mini jam session between H&O and The Roots. I have this sneaking suspicion that they will make it happen. I hope I am not proven wrong!

And seeing as we are in this transition of seasons I thought it would be the perfect time to post some pics of the Change of Season Tourbook. It's one of my most favorite books with some amazing photos inside. Enjoy! And I will have a full report on Life Is Good this weekend! Until then, do it for love!
Saturday...the day of the second show. I think we were all exhausted from the night before. Most of the crew hit the pools at the Hard Rock Hotel. I really enjoyed the Nirvana Pool on the HRH Tower side of the resort. Lovely loungers were placed along the zero-entry sand bottomed pool. Palm trees gave the illusion of being on an island paradise.
Our paradise couldn't be allowed to last the entire day, however! We needed to ready ourselves for the Hall & Oates concert as well as Eliot Lewis' performance at Vinyl Las Vegas. Strangely enough the security folks allowed cameras in without issue! And I did manage to take some cool shots once I got to the stage for the encore. In case anyone has forgotten, I've added a pic of the set list from night two down below. It was a normal greatest hits set, wish they would have mixed it up a little bit more.

Mr. Lewis reached the stage and the place went wild. It was a show filled with one great tune after another. If you haven't done so already, I highly recommend picking up his latest album called Enjoy The Ride. Once again tonight, Klyde Jones and Porter Carroll Jr joined Eliot for Walk on By and Sara Smile respectively. The crowd was thrilled and brought to their feet on many occasion throughout the 90 minute set. After the show Eliot kindly signed autographs and posed for pictures as did other members of the Hall & Oates band and crew. It was a great time for everyone and no one really wanted to leave.

Way cute!! As we sat and noshed we began to plan for the AM and what our plan of action might be. You see, our lovely friend Carol came all the way from Australia to see these shows and hang out with all of her H&O pals. Two years ago Carol met John in an airport back home in Australia. She narrowly missed meeting Daryl and was heartbroken. So we were determined to make it happen for her.

So here we were bright and early on Sunday morning. We had in on good authority that THE BIG MAN would be traveling on the bus to the next gig. So we grabbed our coffee and found the bus. Of course we were excited but at the same time nervous we would miss him and all would be for naught. As we stood under the porte-cochere near the bus all the fellas said goodbye as the boarded. Eliot blew us kisses from the steps of the bus. Then moments later the bus began to PULL AWAY. Wait, what??? It's leaving? How did we miss him? How did this happen?

block a little bit...just in case they were going to pick him up at the HRH Tower entrance. Sure enough, there was the bus! Parked and waiting! Jimmy to us frantically! Off the rest of us went running down the sidewalk in 105 degree heat! I haven't moved that fast in years! It was a sight to see indeed!! Phew...made it to the bus with time to spare.

After a few moments he appeared with his iced coffee in hand. He was wearing his ever present shades, flip flops, shorts, and a button down shirt sleeve shirt. He met us with a friendly "Hi, guys!". I truly felt that he was happy to see us. He asked us all how we were doing and Carol was able to tell her story about being there in Vegas all the way from Australia. He gladly chatted and took pictures with us. Once we said our goodbyes off he went onto the bus. I am pretty sure Carol shrieked with delight. I was so very happy for her! After being a fan for 30 years she was finally able to meet Daryl! We were all on cloud nine for the rest of the day. It was certainly an amazing morning! And another wonderful Hall & Oates trip for the memory books.

INXS, Daryl Hall, and Nile Rodgers during the recording of Original Sin.

Anytime I see Nile Rodgers performing on television, etc, this picture pops into my head. Nile's Sunday night's appearance on the MTV Video Music Awards with Pharrell Williams and Daft Punk was no exception.

This picture was taken in 1983 during the recording and production of INXS's Original Sin from their 1984 album titled "The Swing". Nile was producing the album for INXS. He had worked on producing and arranging the remix of the Hall & Oates' hit "Adult Education" earlier in 1983 and decided to call in Hall for some additional vocals on Original Sin. Daryl and Michael Hutchence (pictured seated next to Daryl) supply the vocals for the chorus.

As I mentioned above, this wasn't the first time Daryl had worked with Nile. Rodger's had worked on the arrangement and production of the remix of "Adult Education" earlier in 1983. Nile and Daryl would hook up once more in the eighties. This time both Hall and Oates would be involved. Daryl and John cut a cover of the Gamble & Huff classic, "Love Train" for the original motion picture soundtrack, "Earth Girls are Easy". It just happens that Rodgers was the producer for the project!
Oh that's right...our lousy 80's party! HA! Fear not! Our next day was truly one for the record books! We started off with a delicious breakfast at Mr. Lucky's 24/7. For what they are (a Rock n' Roll Denny's according to one waiter), the food was quite good! Jimmy opted for a Bacon Waffle...wish I had thought to take a snap of it....the thing actually had chips of crunchy bacon IN IT! IMO, you can't go wrong with bacon....EVER!

Off we went to our bus! This lovely bus would be taking us on our History Channel Tour of Gold & Silver Pawn Shop (Pawn Stars), Toy Shack (Pawn Stars), Ultimate Sports Cards & Memorabilia (Pawn Stars), Rick's Restorations (American Restoration), and Count's Kustoms (Counting Cars).

We had an incredible day meeting all of these History Channel stars and getting to see where all the action takes place. It was really a once-in-a-lifetime experience! Special thanks to Phil Nichols and Susan Perrin of Right Track Booking Agency for organizing the event.

The D-Man. Courtesy Vicky Sullivan.

And now...on to the show! I always get this nervous butterflies-in-my-tummy feeling before every single Daryl & John concert. I don't know if it's the excitement of being with all my friends or knowing that my idol is going to be singing my favorite songs only feet from me...after all the gigs I've seen, I still can't explain it. It's an experience that just takes over every cell and seeps through every pore. True elation!

The set list was standard and to be expected for a casino show. Daryl was dashing in his black western style shirt with white trim. John looked fab in his button down shirt and jeans. The band was at top form! They sailed through hit after hit with ease! This Las Vegas crowd ate it up! They loved it, and the more love the crowd showed the more the band threw that love right back out there! Amazing!

As always, we were treated to two encores and then the party was over...but, was it?!?! Oh no, the night was young. We still had to DASH over to Vinyl Las Vegas (also in the Hard Rock Hotel) to see the one and only Eliot Lewis perform at 11:30 PM. Seats secured, Jimmy ran up to our room to get our cameras which were not allowed into the Hall & Oates show.

Eliot Lewis and John Oates performing "Save Me".

The place was packed at showtime! Eliot took the stage and treated the crowd to his own tunes as well as covers of songs from some of the greatest musicians that have influenced his musical journey throughout the years. Special guest appearances were made by John Oates, Klyde Jones and Porter Carroll Jr.

Lewis and Oates treated us to a new track, from John's latest solo venture (Good Road To Follow), called Save Me. This was truly one of the best songs John has ever written! Klyde Jones joined Eliot and they shared with us a song that both artists have sung lead vocals on in past incarnations of the Average White Band...Walk on By. And later in the show Porter Carroll Jr. took us all to church with a super-soulful rendition of Sara Smile. Dare I say I may have enjoyed this experience more than the Hall & Oates concert?!?! Hmmm....almost!

Next up! Night 2!!!

PART 1Just back from a fab 5 day jaunt to the lonely-land! And it was a trip I will not soon forget! We had a very busy 5 day / 4 night schedule. Daryl Hall & John Oates, Eliot Lewis, and a History Channel bus tour just to name a few tidbits. Here's the rundown...but first....a pic of the boss...

Caption not really required.

Nice, right?!?!

Jim and I headed out to our 6 AM flight bright an early on Thursday. The plan was to arrive in Las Vegas at about 10 AM and be at the hotel and in our swimsuits by 11 AM. Best laid plans and all that....We didn't end up with a room at the lovely Hard Rock Hotel until almost 4 PM! Total bummer. But they made up for it with an upgrade to a HRH Tower Suite! It was one of the nicest rooms I have ever had the pleasure of staying in. And probably the most comfortable hotel bed I have ever SLEPT in! Great furniture, great bed, great bathroom, GREAT digi ipod dock and sound system! 2 thumbs up for that!

Pink Tortillas @ Pink Taco

I should also mention that we stopped in for a light lunch at the famed Pink Taco. I will say that although I was impressed with the restaurant staff and decor I was not all that thrilled with the food. We had the nachos and the steak fajitas. Meh...that's all I'd give it. I did REALLY like those pink tortilla chips though! CUTE!

Next up was the screening of Eliot Lewis' performance and interview at the Gibson Showroom which had been recorded earlier that day. The Ainsworth...a bar within the HRH casino agreed to put it up on a few of the big screens. And like the geeks we are, we all screamed with glee when Eliot appeared on that 6-footer! I will admit, it was very cool to see him up there! We were happy and so was the bar as we guzzled away our jet lag.
After the screening some of us headed for dinner and others to unwind a bit. After all, we needed to be back at The Ainsworth for the High Voltage 80's Party @ 9:30 PM! Oh....what a sad sad party it was. I had arranged in advance to have a reserved table...it was more like a sofa with an ottoman scattered here and there. We all felt very separated...at least I did. It wasn't a good set up. I had also been promised some Hall & Oates themed drinks for the group....big NOPE to that, too. I was so upset and beginning to feel like the weekend was just going to go down hill from there. The best part, however, was seeing everyone and getting together...that's always the best part!!

Will the weekend be a bust?? Will Daryl wear the same clothes on both nights?? Will Eliot pack the house at Vinyl?? Stay tuned for Part 2 and maybe even a Part 3 tomorrow!!

News outlets were reporting that Hall & Oates had broken up but in actuality a decision was made to put H&O on hold so that both Daryl and John could pursue their own interests. John shifted into production and a number of other activities and Daryl set out to release his second solo effort cryptically titled "Three Hearts In The Happy Ending Machine".

Articles about Daryl once again began to pop up in everything from teen magazines to publications aimed at professional sound engineers. One such article that I came across was featured in RockLine Magazine's December 1986 issue. Entitled "Daryl Hall Does It All", this write-up could not be more foretelling. In the last twenty-plus years he has released two additional solo efforts, written songs for such artists as Celine Dion, continued to tour and write music with John Oates, battled Lyme Disease, become a "Family Man" AND most recently reared the brain child known as Live From Daryl's House. It appears that he is still doing it all and shows no signs of stopping anytime soon.

I've been such a slacker! I never gave you guys a review of the December shows I went to. How rude of me!?!

In early December I was fortunate enough to attend Hall & Oates shows in Atlantic City and New York. Both shows were fab but my favorite of the two was definitely NYC! The Beacon Theater is a gorgeous venue which was fully renovated only a few years back.

As Jimmy and I were driving in from Atlantic City we planned to meet a friend at a nearby restaurant called Citrus located at the corner of Amsterdam and 75th. The drinks were fabulous; we opted for a carafe of frozen margarita's flavored with fresh strawberry puree. Yum! Our entrees were just as delicious. My friend and I opted for the pork chop, Jimmy went with the duck. Great flavors for sure!! And yes, OF COURSE we had dessert! If you are ever in the area before a show I highly recommend popping into Citrus for dinner or even just for before-show drinks. Well worth the visit!

I should mention that before dinner we met at Starbucks for a warming cup of coffee and chatted with other fans that were in and out all afternoon. After thawing out sufficiently we took a walk to the rear of the theater as we could hear the band practicing during soundcheck. We heard a few songs including Method of Modern Love...I was really hopeful we'd hear it during the show...but no such luck. Oh well, maybe next time!

After dinner we walked a short city block to the front of the theater. There we were treated with the sight of the marquee lit up with Daryl & John's names in bright lights. The excitement really set in at that point! We thought it was too early to go in and decided to head to the stage door to cheer Daryl & John on their way in. At the door we met up with tour manager, Rick Rosabella. We told him that we were just there to cheer for Daryl and John on their way in and we weren't waiting for autographs, pictures etc. He seemed happy about that....one less thing for him to deal with I suppose. Apparently, John was already inside...nice & early as always. A short time later Mr. Hall arrived with the family. There was only one other person there to cheer him on. We got a big smile and a "Hey guys!" as he quickly strolled into the large brick building through the steel doors.

Now we were really pumped!! Time to go in and check out the merch, grab a drink and get our seats! This was actually one of the best merch set-ups I had ever seen. Manned by about 3-4 theater employees...it was great! The bartenders were awesome, too! So awesome, in fact, that she talked my pal and I into a DOUBLE rum & coke! Dangerous! But, delicious! We had to wait about 15 minutes or so before we could get into the theater...that was ok though because we just kept running into bunches of fellow H&O fans that we knew! I love that!!

15 minutes later we are finally being let in! There are our seats! Center section...2nd row from the stage! Fabulous! The only complaint that I have was that the the mics, instruments, etc were set really far back from the edge of the stage. It was a strange set-up; I've never seen them that far back from the front row. Because of that, when we sat down it basically cut off half of their bodies. Not the best way to see a show.

The set list was short, but I kind of expected that. It was a treat, however, to get 3 Christmas songs for the final encore!! The band did a great job with those!! The band sounded great for the entire weekend actually. They were missing a member though. Zev Katz (bassist) had already committed to performing at the taping of the Kennedy Center Honors show that weekend. To my great pleasure, Klyde Jones (Average White Band) sat in for him! He has a killer stage presence! Such a treat!!

Here is the set list:

I thought it was so sweet. I tried to get a picture but I had a jumper in front of me. If someone out there got one, let me know! I'd love to see it!

First out was John along with his wife Aimee. To our surprise he stopped right away to take a pic! Yea!! Thanks John!! Next out was Daryl along with his family. He smiled and waved at everyone but got right into the vehicle without stopping. I have to assume it's because they were with him....and I can totally understand that. There was so much cheering and screaming for him....he had a HUGE smile on his face. It was awesome!

After the show it was swamped with people so we decided to wait before jamming in there. You never know who you are gonna run into! We chatted with some fellow fans and H&O staffers. Once the parking garage had cleared out sufficiently we decided to go and get the car. Even though we had held off we still waited for over 30 minutes for the car! But it worked out great because I was able to get this great pic with Paul Pesco!
The pictures are up so I thought I'd write a few words about this particular show. It was an interesting venue to say the least. As Jim and I were staying just outside of San Francisco it was about a 3 hour drive to the small town of Friant. Friant is seriously in the middle of nowhere. Along the way we passed a lot of fields, cows and the ranches that went along with them. After about 3 hours and 15 minutes on the road we finally came upon the appropriate exit for the casino. There was a moderately sized gas station and food mart which looked as though it were built quite recently. We decided to pull in for gas as we were unsure if they'd be open when we were on our way back down the mountain. Once the tank was filled we were off to see Daryl Hall and John Oates!!

John Oates - Table Mountain Casino

We finally made it up to the casino. A sterile looking building upon first glance...and it felt the same once we got inside. The playing area is quite small. We were able to walk across in about 2 minutes. There was a VERY small cafe serving snacks and beverages as well as a sit-down restaurant and the obligatory buffet. I should also mention that this was a DRY casino.....yes DRY!!! Ugh! I mean I am no boozer but when I go to a show I like to have a drink or two...oh well.

Anyhow, we needed to eat something so we opted for the buffet. It was a good price at only $12 a person. The price did make us a little leery...but, we went for it. Oddly enough it was really good! Our waitress was very pleasant and consistently brought us drink refills and removed the used plates from our table. Jim and I both thought the salad buffet was great. Everything was really fresh and plentiful. They were also serving New England Clam Chowder as the soup of the day...being from New England and having a husband that makes THE BEST NECC I always give others a try to see how they measure up. This one wasn't half bad. We sampled the other offerings including mashed potatoes, baked chicken, pasta salad...all the traditional buffet standards. Everything was well prepared and fresh. We tried their Asian buffet and it was a poor excuse for Asian cuisine...the Orange Chicken tasted like it had been soaked in Tang....remember Tang?? UGH! For dessert we each had a small dish of soft serve chocolate ice cream...tasty enough...pretty hard to mess that up.

During our meal we happened to run into Everett Bradley at the buffet. He's always so sweet to the fans. Big hugs all around and then off to finish our meals.

Like I mentioned before...this was a really small casino. After we ate we took the 60 second stroll over to "Will Call" to pick up our tickets. We had to wait another 30 minutes or so before we could take our seats. So we sat at the penny slots for a few minutes and ultimately got in line.

Once allowed into the Event Center I was truly underwhelmed. I've been to enough trade shows and meetings at hotels and civic centers in my day. So I knew that there was a good possibility that the California Chapter of Retired Knitters could have held their convention in the same room a week prior. The room screamed annual conference not rock show with it's floral carpeted floors and drop ceilings. Not impressed. Anyhow...the stage crew were diligently making final adjustments to instruments and mics. Jim spotted our pal Andrea Muraglia, she's the gal that handles the teleprompter for D among other things. He told her that I had a press photo with me (I always travel with things to have signed) of Daryl & John with David Ruffin and Eddie Kendrick...she offered to have it signed by D and J and scurried away with it. About 20 minutes later Road Manager - Rick Rosabella brought it out to us and said how Daryl was glad to see that picture and started telling stories of that night with the Temptations. COOL!!

We got the skinny about cameras and such from Rick and the security folks.....only small point & shoot cameras would be allowed. Rats!! I knew the lighting was going to be total poop...and I was right! Soon the guys took the stage and all was right with the world! The guys played Method Of Modern Love which is one of my fav's....they don't play it often enough in my opinion. About midway through the show this older couple comes and stands next to me all gyrating on one another....the woman was trying to get up to the stage. Security wouldn't allow it and she took it upon herself to make their home next to me in the aisle. If looks could kill....she would have been dead...she got the point...

Me & Paul

Encore time! So I'm all ready to skedaddle to the stage....DENIED! This security dude was denying me my pleasure...folks on the other side of the stage got right up there...finally the weenie gave in and let me through. I took my spot right in front of Paul! YAY! I will give this security dude credit though....there were two "fine young things" with their hoo haas hanging out and he held fast and would not let them get their way earlier in the show. Oftentimes I've seen their kind get MORE than their way....so that made me happy.

And then the show came to an end....but it was okay! I knew I had 2 more shows to go!! Ooh I should also mention that on our way out we stopped at the little cafe and got a GIANT chocolate chip cookie to share....it was great...all warm and gooey. And off we went, back down the mountain!
I drove by a house in my neighborhood earlier today and they had no less than 25 carved jack-o-lantern's on their porch....a little too much time on their hands but, hey, to each their own! I prefer to celebrate Halloween, or, HALL-o-ween as I prefer to call it, with music. There's nothing like a special spooky Hall & Oates playlist to get your blood boiling.

Now you might say "Kerri, H&O don't have any Halloween songs!". And I would respond by saying "Why yes they most certainly do!"
Can anyone guess who that is? Yeah, I thought you could! There really is not much else to say...he truly is an icon to me. His music has been a constant in my life for a long time. His lyrics lend advice to most any situation. And more importantly, they tell a story and transport you to another place.
So rather than bore you all with my sentiments I will share with you a bit of a video/pictorial tribute I conjured up a few months ago. For days now I've been trying to think up a clever way to segue into my reviews of the Hall & Oates shows last week in California. To be honest, I've got nothing. I mean, I know what I want to say...how wonderful they were and how great it was to see fans from the west coast, etc etc.....but the delivery...that's what I am undecided on.

So I was reading one of my favorite publications a few moments ago (Goldmine for inquiring minds) and I decided that what I was really itching and longing to discuss is Daryl's upcoming solo album. While there is still no solid information available out there right now regarding title, track list, special guest appearances...yada, yada, yada. I simply cannot wait to hear this thing! What we DO know is that it will be released in the first quarter of 2011 and that it will be on the Verve label. Everything else is pure speculation. And I say speculation is GOOD!! It gets the blood pumping and the mind moving. I mean, seriously, how awesome would it be to get a Daryl album picking up where Can't Stop Dreaming left off. A full size serving of soulful, jazzy smoothness from the golden voice himself. I swoon at the thought!

It's been 15 years since Can't Stop Dreaming was released to Japanese audiences. Hmmm...coincidence that H&O are headed to Japan in early 2011?? A lot has happened in Daryl's creative world since then. And that's to be expected of course. We'd be fools to think he was in the same creative place or working with the same producers and writers for that matter. I can't help but thinking this album will take on a "rock-ier" feel given the direction of Live From Daryl's House and it's appeal to the younger crowd.

And now to tie in one of my experiences from last weeks H&O shows in CA. The set's from the first two shows included a song which is in my "Top 5" Hall & Oates tracks. D & J cracked "Method of Modern Love" out of the cedar chest and played that sucker as if it were 1985. Pure bliss ran through me and the track sounded better than ever! You could see the elation on D's face. I've always thought that "Method" was the quintessential Daryl song...even though it was written by he and Jana Allen...I think the thoughts and lyrics scream Daryl. If someone were to ask me to name a song that defines Daryl and speaks to what he is about...it's this one, hands down. Now, if he'd only lose the guitar....
They'll be making stops in Osaka, Aichi and Tokyo after a 5 year absence. Although John has had solo gigs in Japan as recently as 2009 it's obviously been quite some time since the fellas have performed there as a duo.

Japanese die-hard fans are already chomping at the bit for the opportunity to purchase tickets to these shows. Daryl & John have long been a popular band in Japan. Their introduction to this country and it's pop-loving culture was via a 5-date tour in February of 1980. Hall & Oates travelled to the east numerous times in the 1980's including a 7-date tour in 1982, a 9-date tour in 1984, 8 dates in 1985 and perhaps most well known, the 9-date ooh yeah! tour in 1988. The band continued to tour there through the 90's and early 2000's. Both Daryl and John have toured there numerous times on a solo basis as well.

One of H&O's frequently played venues happens to be the Nippon Budokan Arena, better known more simply as "Budokan". This arena is located in the center of Tokyo and was originally built in the 1960's for use in the 1964 Summer Olympics. I should also mention that in 1966 the Beatles were the first music act/concert to appear at this arena.

Back to the 80's...Daryl and John spent a slew of time there and also appeared in countless Japanese magazines and television specials. They were on the cover of the popular Music Life magazine 3 times and were featured in many issues. United States magazines typically used official press photos and tended to recycle the same images over and over. The photo spreads found in these Japanese magazines are unparalleled. You seriously can't find anything even remotely close to this in the US.

One interesting spread published by Music Life was entitled "A Day With Hall & Oates". It featured numerous photos and comments from the band backstage prior to one of the gigs while on the Big Bam Boom tour. The pictorial gives fans a rare glimpse as to what happened behind the scenes back in those days. Of course, these pics were taken prior to the concert....there really is no telling what went on after the show! Even still....these types of shots are not even remotely like anything ever printed in the US....at least not that I have found.

The photos show band members chatting before the show, John Oates stretches and checks his appearance in the mirror, and Daryl sips on a beverage while relaxing on the sofa. Check out Daryl's perfectly coiffed hair, Charlie De Chant's wild suit and John's painted-on leather pants!
I think this is the first time I have ever been this prepared for a trip...and quite frankly it's a little scary! Still tweaking our itinerary on a daily basis to maximise our time on the west coast. Pretty sure everything is narrowed down at this point. Some of our stops include Hearst Castle, Pier 39 in San Francisco, walking the Golden Gate Bridge, Disneyland, and a whole bunch more!!!

I've decided that I am going to post video updates from the road at every chance I get. I'll include the whole trip...not just H&O moments...although those are the best!! I'll post the videos here and on my Facebook page so they'll be easy to find and follow. Videos will begin next Sunday AM so stay tuned!!!Kerrihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15407654392102840692noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-481144268064653812.post-68434699578242263692010-09-17T22:03:00.000-04:002010-09-17T22:03:39.011-04:009 Day Countdown to Cali BEGINS!

I am really starting to get excited now. I've had so much going on at home that I haven't had too much time to think about it. Realizing today that I am 9 days out has really made the buzzer go off in my head. So YEA for that!!!

Jimmy and I have pretty much decided on all of our activities...as of right now that is. One stop on our agenda is a shop in Venice Beach called Artisan. This particular outlet is ripe with the fruit of local Venice artists. And by fruit I, of course, mean ART!! Artisan is owned and operated by none other than Darren Hall and his business partner Steve Avila. Their shop boasts a wide array of paintings, drawings, photography, jewelry and glass sculpture. On select evenings you can even enjoy local musicians including the owners...after all, they are artist's too!

Artisan has a website which will be expanded in the coming months. Visit ArtisanVenice.com to sample some of the gorgeous pieces that are currently available. According to Darren Hall, the shop will soon be moving to a larger space that will include a coffee shop and cafe! Hoping to catch one of Darren's gigs while we are in town...and at the very least I hope they are not moving while we are there. Now check out Darren and this acoustic ditty!
